Dr Sathena Chan is an Associate Professor in Language Assessment at the Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment (CRELLA) at the University of Bedfordshire. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language Teaching, a Master’s in Language Testing and Program Evaluation, and a PhD in Language Assessment. Her career spans teaching EAP/ESP in Asia, data analysis, and consultancy roles for assessment providers like Cambridge University Press & Assessment, Trinity College London, and Oxford University Press.
Research Interests: She specializes in large-scale language assessment, focusing on construct definition, test design, rating scales, and validation. Her work explores the dynamic relationships between multimodal input-based tasks, test-takers’ cognitive processes, and performance levels. She also advocates for methodological innovations in L2 research and practice.
Academic Contributions: At CRELLA, she has secured over 30 research grants/consultancy projects and collaborates with leading assessment providers to develop high-stakes exams taken globally. Her publications include books with Cambridge University Press and chapters on topics like L2 reading-listening differences and construct definition in language assessment.
Professional Service: She serves as SIG Coordinator for the British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL) and on the UK Association for Language Testing and Assessment’s committees. She regularly reviews for journals, publishers, and research councils like ESRC and is on the editorial board of Innovation of Language Learning and Teaching.

Advising: She supervises postgraduate research students in areas such as assessing L2 reading/writing, cognitive processes in testing, and methodology in language testing. Current supervisees include Ian Newby (Reading-into-writing assessment) and Steven Jones (Synthesis writing and teacher feedback). Completed students include Dr Tanzeela Anbreen (keystroke logging study), Dr Safia Sheraz (eye tracking for academic reading), Martine Holland (academic literacy testing), and Dr Nicola Latimer (eye-tracking academic reading-into-writing tasks).
