Sascha Scott

Sascha Scott is an Associate Professor of Art History at Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the Native American and Indigenous Studies faculty. She specializes in 19th- and 20th-century American art and Native North American art, focusing on themes such as Indigenous representation, art and politics, and environmental issues. She earned a Ph.D. in Art History from Rutgers University, an M.A. from George Washington University, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Colorado College.

Research & Awards: Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Arthur Kinsley Porter Prize (2014) and the Phillip Frost Essay Award (2021). Her book A Strange Mixture: The Art and Politics of Painting Pueblo Indians (2015) explores representations of Native Americans in art and received multiple accolades. Current research includes a book project on Modern Pueblo Painting, supported by grants from the NEH and the Howard Foundation.

Teaching & Service: Scott teaches courses on American art, Native American studies, and museum practices. She has served as Director of Graduate Studies in Art and Music Histories (2014–2023) and chairs the Humanities Council at Syracuse University. She co-curated exhibitions such as Continuity, Innovation, and Resistance: The Art of Peter B. Jones (2023) and Reckonings: American Art and the Climate Crisis (2022).

Grants & Honors: Recent grants include funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the New Foundation for Art History. She holds fellowships from institutions like the Lunder Institute and Brown University's Howard Foundation.
