Sarita Cannon is a Professor and Literature Program Coordinator at the Department of English Language and Literature, San Francisco State University. She holds an A.B. in Literature (magna cum laude) from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in English from the University of California, Berkeley. Her postdoctoral research focused on American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Her research explores multiracial identities, particularly intersections of African and Native American ancestry, through autobiographical forms like scrapbooks, oral histories, and music. Her monograph Black Native Autobiographical Acts: Navigating the Minefields of Authenticity (Lexington Books, 2021) examines representations of racial, ethnic, and cultural belonging. She has presented globally at conferences in Spain, France, Japan, South Africa, Tunisia, Ghana, and Australia.
Though no specific scientific awards are listed, her scholarly contributions span journals such as Biography, Ethnic Studies Review, and MELUS. As a classically trained soprano, she actively participates in Bay Area music groups.
