Sari Nauman is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Historical Studies. She holds a Pro Futura Scientia XVII Fellowship from the Swedish Collegium of Advanced Studies. Her research focuses on uncertainty, insecurity, and displacement in early modern Sweden, particularly analyzing concepts like trust/control, migration, and state formation. She leads two major projects: 'Outsiders Within' (SCAS/RJ-funded, 2023–2028) on internally displaced persons in early modern Europe, and 'Humanitarian Great Power?' (Swedish Research Council, 2023–2025) examining refugee reception during the Great Northern War. She also co-leads 'Baltic Hospitality' (2019–2021), analyzing stranger reception in coastal regions. Her work emphasizes transdisciplinary methods, blending political science, philosophy, and international relations perspectives.
Recent publications include studies on refugee politics, historical methodologies, and the intersection of private/public spheres in 18th-century Scandinavia. Key themes in her articles include state sovereignty, oaths as governance tools, and spatial securitization. She advocates for accessible archival practices, co-authoring critiques on the impact of restricted access to Sweden's National Archives.
Nauman’s research grants include SCAS/RJ, VR, and Östersjöstiftelsen funding. She collaborates internationally, hosting projects at Södertörn University and contributing to academic networks across Europe. Her teaching spans historical theory, compilation thesis guidance, and critical analysis of primary sources.
