Sarah Willen is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut and Director of the Research Program on Global Health and Human Rights. Her work focuses on intersections of health equity, urban governance, and human rights. She leads the ARCHES study exploring Americans' conceptions of health equity through mixed-methods research in Cleveland, Ohio, and national surveys. Her research engages themes of migration, social justice, and moral economies in healthcare access.
Recent projects include analyzing urban health coalitions' equity agendas and investigating how migration influences health outcomes for irregular migrants. She has published on cultural competence in medical education, moral geographies in Negev/Naqab landscapes, and debates over migrants' healthcare deservingness in Israel.
Willen collaborates across disciplines and communities to translate research into actionable policies. Her work emphasizes participatory approaches with local stakeholders and integrates anthropological insights into public health frameworks.
