Sarah Whetstone is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology, Criminology & Social Work within Bradley University's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. She joined the department in 2016 after earning her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Whetstone's expertise spans social inequalities, sociology of the body, social theory, punishment and deviance, addiction studies, and qualitative/ethnographic methods.

Her research explores how inequalities shape access to addiction treatment and the intersection of gender, sport, and embodiment. She co-edited the 2025 Routledge volume Consuming Bodies: Body Commodification and Embodiment in Late Capitalist Societies, contributing a chapter on recreational pole dancing as embodied resistance. Her prior work appears in journals like Social Problems and Social Science & Medicine.
Dr. Whetstone teaches core sociology courses (Intro to Sociology, Social Theory) and electives (Social Inequalities, Race, Ethnicity & Power). She integrates her research into the Women’s and Gender Studies, African American Studies, and Bradley Honors programs. In 2025, she will co-mentor the university's new social justice-themed Living Learning Community.
