Sarah Wernimont, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota with dual appointments in Molecular, Cellular, Developmental Biology and Genetics and as a Physician in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. She also serves as a Preceptor in the Medical Scientist Training Program.

Research Focus: The Wernimont Lab investigates how maternal nutrient availability affects placental development and pregnancy outcomes through:

• Mitochondrial nutrient flux analysis
• Epigenetic/transcriptional reprogramming studies
• Gestational diabetes impact assessments
• Obstetric care delivery optimization

Recent work emphasizes metformin effects on trophoblast differentiation and mitochondrial citrate metabolism. Collaborative clinical research extends to diabetes in pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.
