Dr. David Simmons is a Senior Lecturer in Developmental Biology at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. With a PhD from Western Ontario University, he has established himself as a prominent researcher in placental and developmental biology with over 96 publications spanning two decades.
His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of placental development, trophoblast differentiation, and fetal growth. Dr. Simmons has made significant contributions to understanding sulfate transporters in brain development, preeclampsia pathophysiology, and the effects of maternal exposures on placental function. His work frequently employs mouse and rat models to investigate fundamental developmental processes.
Analysis of his recent publications (2019-2024) reveals a strong focus on placental biomarkers in pregnancy complications, particularly preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction. His work bridges reproductive medicine and neuroscience, with parallel research streams examining both placental development and neurodevelopmental processes, especially regarding sulfate transporters and extracellular matrix components like perineuronal nets.
Dr. Simmons has successfully secured multiple competitive research grants including ARC Discovery Projects and NHMRC Project Grants. His supervision record demonstrates significant mentorship of early-career researchers, with over a dozen PhD and Master's students completed or in progress across diverse projects related to placental biology, neurodevelopment, and metabolic regulation.
His laboratory work centers on placental development and function, with particular expertise in trophoblast biology, sulfate transport mechanisms, and the molecular basis of pregnancy complications. Current research directions include investigating SPINT1 as a regulator of placental development and examining the impact of metformin on placental metabolism in diabetic pregnancies.
