Sarah Wagner is a Senior Researcher at the University of the Highlands and Islands' Centre for Living Sustainability. She specializes in critical ethnography, addressing social and digital inequalities through interdisciplinary research in media anthropology, sociology, and critical media studies. Her work focuses on digital storytelling, communicative justice, and systemic disparities in digitalized societies. She holds a PhD in Information and Knowledge Society, an MSc in Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies, and an MA in Philosophy.
Research Interests: Digital inclusion, postcolonial studies, community communication, and digital ageism. Her research spans global contexts, including Argentina, Bolivia, Japan, and Uganda, emphasizing marginalized communities and technological power dynamics.
Publications: Sarah’s work examines media environments in long-term care, Guarani communities’ mobile technology use, and socio-technical interventions to tackle ageism. Her articles appear in journals like New Media & Society and Mobile Media and Communication.
Awards: Royal Society of Canada’s Alice Wilson Award and three internationally competitive fellowships. Her research bridges theory and practice, advocating for equitable digital systems.
Advising & Grants: Currently mentoring PhD students in digital/social inclusion and postcolonial studies. Collaborates on projects like the Social Impact Assessment for Island Communities (2024).
