Dr Maria Sourbati is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton's School of Art and Media, leading research in 'Smart Infrastructure: Cities, Travel, Energy and Housing'. Her work examines social implications of emerging technologies, focusing on mobility, age, and data. She is affiliated with the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing and the Inclusive Digital Societies Research Excellence Group.
Education: BA in Political Science (Panteion University), MA in Communication Policy (City University London), PhD in TV Technologies/Markets/Regulation (Brunel University). Prior roles include research at the British Film Institute and Goldsmiths College.
Research interests include digital inclusion, age relations, and ageism in digital contexts. Key topics include smart mobility, media literacy, and policy-driven ICT diffusion. She explores how data and technology shape age-related social inclusion, addressing issues like gender, race, and class.
Grants include the ITSSI (2016–2017) and AGEAI (2023–2027) projects. Supervision focuses on smart technologies, digital inequality, and transport exclusion. Current PhD students include Sijuade Olanihun Yusuf and Vicki Painting.
External roles: External examiner at University of Westminster (2022–2026), London College of Communication (2018–present), and validator at Leeds Trinity University. Active in networks like the COST Action on Ageism and ACT Concordia.
