Sarah Stabenfeldt is a Professor in the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU). She holds additional affiliations with the Sustainable Macromolecular Materials and Manufacturing program and the Molecular/Cellular Biology (MS/PhD) program. Her research focuses on regenerative medicine strategies for neural injuries, particularly traumatic brain injury (TBI), and developing novel biomaterials for theranostic applications. She earned her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Saint Louis University and her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
Dr. Stabenfeldt’s work has been recognized through prestigious awards such as the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, NSF CAREER Award, and Arizona Biomedical Research Consortium Early Stage Investigator Award. She serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and on editorial boards for Biomaterials Science and Acta Biomaterialia. She is actively involved in professional organizations like the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) and the Society for Biomaterials (SFB).
Her research group investigates endogenous neural stem cell homing mechanisms and integrates these signals into engineered matrices. Current projects include nanoparticle targeting strategies for TBI, sex-dependent nanomedicine approaches, and biomarker discovery via phage display. She leads multidisciplinary grants funded by NIH, NSF, and industry partners, focusing on translational solutions for neural injury repair.
Dr. Stabenfeldt is committed to advancing diversity in STEM, co-authoring frameworks for equitable hiring in academic settings. She teaches courses in biomedical engineering, mentoring students through honors theses and research programs. Her lab develops biomaterials for neural tissue engineering, with applications in drug delivery, stem cell transplantation, and diagnostic tools.
