Dr. Bruce Towe is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Arizona State University (ASU). His primary research focuses on neurostimulation, microelectronic implants, bioelectronics, and biomedical instrumentation, supported by grants from NASA, NIH, NSF, and other organizations. He has pioneered technologies in wireless neural recording systems and ultrasound-powered biotelemetry, with a recent emphasis on transferring ASU-developed neurostimulation technologies to small businesses.
Education: Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Penn State University.
Research Interests: Includes microscale neural implants, bioelectronic instrumentation, biosensors, medical ultrasound, and biomedical device design. He actively participates in neuroengineering and medical imaging emphases within the department.
Teaching: Courses include BME-413 Biomedical Instrumentation, BME-423 Biomedical Instrumentation Lab, BME-522 Biosensors, and BME-566 Medical Imaging.
Grants & Awards: Over 20 funded projects since 1985, including NIH-NINDS support for wireless ultrasound biotelemetry and NSF grants for multi-channel neuroelectrode systems. Notable collaborators include NASA, Mayo Clinic, and the Whitaker Foundation.
Service: Served on NIH Neurotechnology Study Sections, as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, and chaired NASA review panels. Active in departmental committees at ASU since 2002.
