Sarah Schulman is the Ralla Klepak Professor of English at Northwestern University, specializing in Creative Writing (Nonfiction and Fiction) with an emphasis on manuscript development. She is a globally recognized novelist, playwright, screenwriter, nonfiction writer, and AIDS historian. Her career began in 1979 with grassroots LGBTQ+ and feminist journalism, later expanding into activism with ACT UP and the Lesbian Avengers. She co-founded MIX: The Queer Experimental Film Festival (1986–2019) and directs the ACT UP Oral History Project. Her works bridge art, activism, and academic inquiry, addressing themes like queer solidarity, gentrification, and political resistance.
Her academic and creative contributions include over 20 books, plays, and films. Notable publications include Let the Record Show: A Political History of ACT UP, New York (2021), which won multiple awards, and Conflict Is Not Abuse (2016). She has received prestigious honors such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Contribution to LGBT Publishing.
Schulman’s research spans AIDS historiography, queer internationalism, and the intersection of art with social justice. She collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including TV/film adaptations of her works and plays like Carson McCullers and ROE V WADE. Her advisory roles include Jewish Voice for Peace and academic mentoring of students in creative writing and critical studies.
