Sarah Rugheimer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University, holding the Allan I. Carswell Chair for the Public Understanding of Astronomy. Her research focuses on modeling exoplanetary atmospheres, biosignatures, and habitability, particularly using theoretical and computational methods. She explores how stellar activity influences planetary atmospheres and how future telescopes like JWST and LUVOIR will detect Earth-like exoplanets.
Rugheimer earned a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Calgary, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Harvard University. She has taught at Tufts University and the University of St. Andrews, emphasizing astrobiology and public outreach. Her awards include the TED Fellowship (2020), the Caroline Herschel Prize, and recognition for teaching excellence.
Her research spans astrobiology, planetary climate modeling, and the impact of stellar UV radiation on exoplanets. She co-hosts the podcast 'Self-care with Drs. Sarah' and advocates for gender equity in STEM through curated resources on bias and mentorship. Rugheimer’s work bridges academia and public engagement, addressing societal challenges like scientific literacy and climate change denial.
