Sarah Ralph-Lane is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and Criminology at Northumbria University's Social Sciences Department. She holds a PhD awarded in 2010 and has led programs such as BSc Sociology and upcoming BSc Criminology and Sociology. Her research focuses on youth empowerment, particularly for disadvantaged young people and survivors of domestic/sexual abuse. She employs ethnographic and creative methods, including the ESRC-funded Girl-Kind North East project, which used creativity to build self-worth among young women.
Current research evaluates Operation Encompass, a police-school partnership addressing domestic abuse impact on children. She contributes to Northumbria’s Gender, Violence and Abuse Research Theme and collaborates on domestic abuse support strategies. Externally, she serves as a Trustee for the Young Women’s Film Academy, merging filmmaking with mental health advocacy.
Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to education and gender equality. Key outputs include peer-reviewed journal articles and policy reports launched in Parliament. Supervision includes guiding 4 students in related fields.
