Dr Sarah Paris serves as a Research Associate at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research within the Department of Archaeology at the University of Cambridge. Her position situates her at the intersection of biological anthropology and archaeological science, contributing to the university's global leadership in human evolutionary studies.
Her research program centers on:
- Osteoarchaeology and skeletal analysis
- Paleoanthropological investigations of human evolution
- Cultural evolution through material culture studies
- Symbolic behaviour and cognitive development in prehistory
- Bioarchaeological approaches to behavioural evolution
Geographically focused across Africa, Europe and Southeast Asia, Dr Paris examines Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods to understand how ochre use and other material culture reflect fundamental shifts in human cognition. Her work bridges archaeological evidence with anthropological theory to reconstruct evolutionary trajectories of symbolic thought and social complexity. The research demonstrates particular strength in connecting microscopic skeletal analysis with macro-scale cultural evolution patterns.
