معرفی
Professor Sarah Newbury is a Professor of RNA Biology at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), University of Sussex. Her research focuses on RNA degradation mechanisms and their roles in development and disease, particularly cancer and stem cell biology. She holds roles such as Impact Champion and Joint Leader of the Brighton and Sussex Cancer Research Network.
Educated at the University of Edinburgh (BSc Zoology/Genetics) and University of Leeds (PhD in ecological genetics), she transitioned to RNA biology during postdoctoral work at the University of Dundee. She has held academic positions at Oxford, Newcastle, and BSMS since 2007. Her work includes discovering Dis3L2’s role in cell proliferation and identifying miRNA biomarkers for diseases like sepsis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Research interests include RNA stability, miRNA biomarkers, and Drosophila developmental mechanisms. She has pioneered biomarker patents for conditions such as myeloma and motor neurone disease. Grants include funding from BBSRC, MND Association, and the Royal Society.
Teaching involves leading gene regulation modules for medical students and supervising research projects across BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. She founded the South Coast and Sussex RNA Research Networks to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
