Dr. Sarah Monisha Pulimood is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) within the School of Science. She currently serves as a Program Director in the Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation while maintaining her faculty position at TCNJ. Dr. Pulimood previously served as the Barbara Meyers Pelson Chair in Faculty-Student Engagement (2018-2021) and as Chair of the Computer Science Department (2014-2023).
Dr. Pulimood's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Tulane University, 2003
- M.S. in Computer Science, Tulane University, 2001
- B.S. in Computer Science, University of Pune, 1990
Dr. Pulimood's research focuses on innovative approaches to computer science education, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement. Her work explores how computational thinking can be integrated across disciplines to address real-world problems, with particular emphasis on social justice issues. She has pioneered the "Collaborating Across Boundaries" (CAB) model, which connects courses from different disciplines through collaborative projects with community partners. Her research also investigates collective intelligence algorithms and data integration challenges in educational contexts.
Dr. Pulimood's publications reveal a consistent focus on interdisciplinary education and community engagement, with a growing emphasis on social justice applications of computing. Her recent work examines how collaborative projects between computer science and other disciplines (particularly criminology and social sciences) can enhance civic engagement and address issues like racial injustice in the criminal justice system. She has also studied the impact of the pandemic on interdisciplinary collaboration and distance learning.
Notable awards and recognitions include:
- Barbara Meyers Pelson Chair in Faculty-Student Engagement (2018-2021)
- Teaching Assistantship Excellence Award from Tulane University (2003)
- Recognition by Red Hat for championing open source education
Dr. Pulimood has been principal investigator or co-PI on multiple NSF grants totaling over $2.7 million, including the Collaborating Across Boundaries project (NSF #1914869), FIRSTS Foundation program, and several initiatives focused on broadening participation in computing. She mentors numerous undergraduate researchers each year, with students working on projects related to CABECTPortal, data integration, and collective intelligence systems. Her research group has developed several platforms including CABPortal for collaborative project dissemination.
Dr. Pulimood leads the CAB Research Group at TCNJ, which focuses on developing frameworks for interdisciplinary collaboration in undergraduate education. The group has created CABECTPortal and CABPortal, web-based platforms designed to facilitate and sustain interdisciplinary educational projects. Current research directions include improving data integration methods, enhancing collective intelligence algorithms, and expanding the application of the CAB model to new disciplines and community partnerships.
