Sarah McMenamin is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Boston College. She holds a B.S. from Mount Holyoke College and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Her research focuses on understanding how developmental processes are regulated by genetic and endocrine factors, particularly thyroid hormone's role in vertebrate skeletal development and appendage regeneration using zebrafish as a model system. Key interests include evolutionary developmental biology, skeletal patterning, and the integration of developmental timing mechanisms.
Her lab investigates mechanisms controlling skeletal morphogenesis, craniofacial development, and fin regeneration, with a particular emphasis on thyroid hormone's role in these processes. Supported by NIH R35 MIRA Award, NSF CAREER Award, and Smith Family Foundation grants, her work bridges developmental biology, endocrinology, and evolutionary studies.
Research highlights include discovering thyroid hormone's role in proximodistal fin patterning and craniofacial bone formation, as well as exploring how developmental timing influences skeletal diversity and congenital disorders. The lab maintains a strong commitment to fostering inclusive scientific training environments and advancing interdisciplinary collaboration.
