Sarah M. Lein is a Full Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Basel, affiliated with the Faculty of Business and Economics. Prior to joining the university in November 2014, she served as a Senior Economist at the Swiss National Bank. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Zurich in 2009.
Research Interests include monetary economics, international macroeconomics and finance, and business cycles. Her work explores inflation determinants, exchange-rate effects on prices and expenditures, financial constraints for firms, and the interplay between microeconomic price-setting and macroeconomic inflation processes.
Recent Publications analyze exchange rate pass-through, granular inflation origins, cross-border consumption, and media influences on economic perceptions. Her studies leverage firm-level data, natural experiments during currency shocks (e.g., 2015 Swiss Franc appreciation), and behavioral insights from randomized trials.
Affiliations include research fellowships at the CEPR MEF, IFM Programmes, KOF ETH Zurich, and CESIfo, as well as membership in the CEBRA Inflation: Drivers and Dynamics Research Program.
