Sarah Leavens is a Teaching Associate Professor and Assistant Director of the Public & Professional Writing Program at the University of Pittsburgh's Department of English. She holds affiliations with CEAT, the Internships program, and the Writers' Café. Her roles include Writing Center consultation, co-coordinating the Writers' Café, and advising the Association of Writers student organization. She specializes in integrating creative writing with visual arts (drawing, painting, book arts) and has conducted workshops for seniors with Alzheimer's/dementia and women in recovery programs.
Education: MFA in Poetry/Nonfiction from Chatham University (2012), with specializations in travel writing and pedagogy. Served as 2012-2013 Out of the Forge Writer-in-Residence in Braddock, PA. Her poetry appears in LUNCH, Corium, So to Speak, and other journals.
Committees: Undergraduate Placement/Internship Committee, Assessment Committee. Active in PA Arts in Education initiatives including Poetry Out Loud. Teaching artist focusing on arts-pedagogy intersections since 2019, including a panel presentation on 'Writing as Social Engagement' at the Barrelhouse Conference.
