Sarah Lahasky is an Assistant Professor of Music in Ethnomusicology at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minnesota), previously serving as Visiting Assistant Professor at Carleton College. She holds a strong affiliation with Shenandoah University, where she completed her studies and developed foundational perspectives through programs like the Bass Coalition Summer Workshop. Her academic focus integrates global musical traditions, with teaching specialties in ethnomusicology, Western music history, and first-year seminars emphasizing international perspectives.
Research and Teaching: Dr. Lahasky emphasizes global citizenship through courses exploring the music of the African Diaspora, Latin America, and Minnesota. She incorporates international collaborations, such as Zoom lectures with South African ethnomusicologists and live performances by local artists, to enrich classroom experiences. Performance: She actively performs with the Charles Gorczynski Tango Quartet and Twin Cities Tango Collective, extending her pedagogy through immersive cultural events like student-attended milonga dances.
Mentorship and Global Engagement: Inspired by her mentors at Shenandoah—including Professors Andrea M. Smith and Bryan Pearce-Gonzales—she prioritizes individualized student guidance. Her global experiences include Shenandoah's Global Citizenship Project to Trinidad and Tobago, a Global Experiential Learning trip to Argentina, and post-graduation travels that inform her teaching philosophy of fostering global awareness through music.
