Dr. Sarah Koon-Magnin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University (CNU), where she joined in 2024. Previously, she served at the University of South Alabama (2011-2024), earning awards for teaching, academic service, and humanitarian work. Her expertise lies in examining sexual assault response mechanisms, victimology, and the intersection of gender, race, and institutional policies.
Dr. Koon-Magnin holds a Ph.D. and MA in Crime, Law, and Justice from Penn State University, and a BA in Sociology/Religious Studies from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her research focuses on societal and institutional responses to sexual assault survivors, including campus-based policies, trauma-informed care, and LGBTQ+ victimization.
Her recent work highlights trends in sexual assault prevention programs, multidisciplinary team effectiveness, and the impact of mandatory reporting policies. She has authored books such as The US Criminal Justice System: A Reference Handbook (2024) and Sexual Assault and Harassment in America: Examining the Facts (2022), emphasizing systemic analysis and policy reform.
Dr. Koon-Magnin’s articles frequently address campus safety, Title IX compliance, and race/gender dynamics in reporting barriers. She advocates for improved victim support systems and challenges myths surrounding LGBTQ+ communities’ experiences of sexual violence.
