Sarah Keyes is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Nevada, Reno. She specializes in 19th century U.S. history, the U.S. West, environmental history, and intercultural interactions between Indigenous peoples and Euro-Americans. Her research focuses on overland trails, suffrage movements, and spatial history.
Education: Ph.D., University of Southern California; B.A., Pomona College.
Research interests include gender, migration, sensory history, and memory. Her first book, *American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail* (2023), reinterprets the overland trails’ environmental and cultural dimensions. Current projects include a transnational study of suffrage in the U.S. West, supported by a Mellon-Schlesinger Grant.
Publications span journals like *Journal of American History* and *Western Historical Quarterly*, emphasizing Indigenous agency and environmental narratives. Teaching includes courses on Western U.S. history, environmental history, and Indigenous studies.
