Sarah Johnston is a Lecturer in Phonetics, Speech and Hearing Sciences at Queen Margaret University. With over 20 years of experience as a Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (SLT), she specializes in evidence-based interventions for children with complex communication needs, additional support needs, and disabilities. Her work incorporates AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) and involves coaching families/caregivers in supportive strategies. She has practiced in NHS, private sectors, and charity work, including telepractice delivery.
Teaching responsibilities include Phonetics, Lifespan Communication Development, and clinical skill development through Peer Enhanced ePlacement (PEEP) programs. She actively contributes to the clinical placement team, ensuring students gain practical skills needed for future SLT roles.
Research interests focus on phonological difficulties' impact on literacy, the therapeutic coaching role of SLTs, and sustainable professional development in clinical practices. Affiliations include membership in the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and the Health and Care Professions Council.
