Sarah Herbert is a Lecturer in the Department of Classics at the University of Virginia, based in Cocke Hall B018.
She earned her BA in English and Math Science from Rice University in 1983 and completed her PhD in Classics at the University of Virginia in 2017. Her dissertation, The Philosopher and the Farmer: Spatial Metaphor in Three Conversations in Euripides, Plato, and Xenophon, examines spatial metaphors across classical texts.
Her research focuses on Greek and Roman historiography and epic poetry, with specialized attention to georgic metaphor and imagery in Xenophon and Vergil. She has presented on topics including Herodotus the Gift (Classical Association of Virginia, 2020) and Socrates and Tantalus in Xenophon’s Oeconomicus (CAMWSS, 2018), highlighting interdisciplinary connections between agricultural symbolism and philosophical discourse.
Dr. Herbert co-chairs the Ecoclassical Caucus e-newsletter and engages in professional development through paper marbling and bookbinding workshops.
