Sarah Hengel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences. Her research program explores DNA damage mechanisms induced by environmental toxicants and repair processes involving nuclear proteins, with a specialized focus on the intersection of female reproductive disorders (endometriosis, POI, PCOS) and gynecological cancers.
Research combines cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and single-molecule techniques (C-trap) to investigate DNA repair mechanisms in aging, disease, and cancer contexts. Current projects examine how the Shu complex recognizes replication fork damage and facilitates RAD51/RAD52-dependent repair pathways.
Major recognitions include the Merrin Fund for Faculty Excellence and an R00 grant from NIEHS. The laboratory comprises 3 PhD students and 3 undergraduates, with research detailed at srhlab.com.
