Sarah Hartley is an Associate Professor at the University of Exeter Business School's Department of Science, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. She held a Visiting Professor position at the University of British Columbia's Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) from January 2022 to August 2022. Her research focuses on governance mechanisms involving science and technology, particularly in global health, sustainable agriculture, conservation, and gene drive technology development. She explores how governance systems engage diverse stakeholders across Africa, North America, Australia, and Europe.
Hartley holds a PhD in Politics and Environmental Studies from the University of Toronto. She serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Responsible Innovation (ranked top 3 in Ethics and 2nd in History & Philosophy of Science). Her research has been funded by the British Academy and Wellcome Trust, supporting projects on collaborative governance in gene drive development and risk assessment frameworks.
Her work intersects with innovation policy, STI governance, and ethical science practices. During her UBC visitation, she collaborated with the Faculty of Science's interdisciplinary environmental sustainability initiatives.
