Sarah Gurr is a Lecturer in Literacy and English Education at the School of Education, Charles Sturt University. She holds a PhD in Education from the University of Newcastle and previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Research Assistant and Sessional Academic at the University of Newcastle before joining CSU.
Her educational background includes a BTeach(Humanities)(Hons 1) and PhD (Education), both from the University of Newcastle. Her doctoral research examined tensions in environmental and sustainability education and the complexities of teaching the Sustainability Cross-Curriculum Priority of the Australian Curriculum in fossil fuel communities.
Dr. Gurr's research spans three interconnected areas:
- Environmental and sustainability education, with a focus on fossil fuel communities
- Educational ethics, ethical dilemmas and ethical decision-making
- Precarity and higher education
Her research employs qualitative and philosophical methods to investigate how people navigate complex contextual challenges to pursue more ethical and just ways of living, working and being. Recent publications focus on precarious employment in academia, ethical dilemmas for educators during the pandemic, and environmental education in fossil fuel communities.
She serves as the Postgraduate and ECR Member Representative of the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia and is an active member of several professional organizations including:
- Australian Association for Research in Education
- Australian Teacher Education Association
- Educational Philosophy Research Hub, University of Melbourne
Dr. Gurr has extensive teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate teacher education programs, covering subjects such as educational ethics, philosophy of education, sociology of education, placement preparation and research methods. She is also a qualified high school English and History teacher with practical classroom experience.
