Sarah Gilbert

Dr. Sarah Gilbert is a Research Associate in the Department of Communication at Cornell University and Research Director of the Citizens and Technology Lab (CAT Lab). Her work focuses on understanding and designing healthy online communities, with an emphasis on moderation practices, ethical research methodologies, and cross-platform data use. She holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland.

Her research explores topics such as volunteer moderator labor, community governance, ethical data science, and participatory citizen science. Key contributions include developing frameworks for intersectional moderation and creating educational tools like the CONTENTR game to teach social media governance tradeoffs.
