Manoel Horta Ribeiro is an Assistant Professor at Princeton University in the Department of Computer Science, affiliated with the Princeton Center for Information Technology Policy (CITP). He received his Ph.D. from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2024, with his doctoral work conducted in the Data Science Lab under Bob West. Prior to his Ph.D., he earned his MSc and BSc in Computer Science from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil, where he was recognized as Best Graduating Student.
His educational journey includes significant international experience, having conducted research at institutions including Google Zurich, Microsoft Research, and Facebook (now Meta). During his doctoral studies, he collaborated with major tech platforms including Meta, Reddit, Prolific, and Microsoft.
Horta Ribeiro's research focuses on computational social science, artificial intelligence, and social computing. He specializes in examining the societal impacts of online platforms and generative AI, with particular interest in content moderation, algorithmic governance, and the policy implications of digital technologies. His work is characterized by a commitment to addressing real-world issues and translating research insights into actionable policy and design recommendations.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on understanding platform dynamics, content moderation effectiveness, and the societal implications of AI systems. His work spans multiple top venues including Nature Human Behaviour, ACM CHI, CSCW, ICWSM, and WebSci, with a strong emphasis on empirical studies that combine computational methods with social science theory.
