Professor Sarah Gabbott is a Professor of Palaeontology at the University of Leicester’s School of Geography, Geology and the Environment. Her research focuses on understanding the processes of fossilization, particularly the preservation of soft tissues in exceptional Lagerstätten deposits, and applying palaeontological methods to study contemporary environmental issues like plastic pollution. She combines experimental decay studies with fieldwork to unravel the interplay between biological decay, sediment dynamics, and environmental preservation.
Her work spans several key areas: (1) Investigating the transformation of organic material into fossils through laboratory experiments and sediment analysis, (2) Exploring the environmental impact of plastic pollution on freshwater systems and sediment transport, and (3) Decoding the evolutionary history of organisms using exceptionally preserved fossils. Notable contributions include studies on the Soom Shale (Ordovician), Chengjiang Biota (Cambrian), and the role of microbial communities in fossilization.
Recent research highlights the long-term geological legacy of human-made materials, such as plastics, which she terms 'technofossils.' Her findings bridge ancient and modern environmental studies, providing insights into both Earth’s past and future biosphere dynamics. She also emphasizes the importance of taphonomic bias in interpreting fossil records, advocating for rigorous experimental approaches to mitigate misinterpretations.
Professor Gabbott’s methodologies include advanced analytical techniques, decay experiments, and interdisciplinary collaborations, ensuring her work remains at the forefront of palaeontological and environmental science.
