Derek Siveter is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford and affiliated with the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. He has played a pivotal role in the international research and conservation efforts of the Chengjiang fossil site in Yunnan, China, collaborating with Professor Hou Xianguang and UK palaeobiologists since the 1980s. His work focuses on understanding the evolutionary significance of the Chengjiang fossils, which capture critical moments in the emergence of complex marine biodiversity during the early Cambrian period (520 million years ago).
As a UNESCO World Heritage bid consultant, Siveter contributed to shifting Yunnan’s government policy from phosphate mining toward fossil site preservation, education, and tourism. His research emphasizes deciphering early animal body plans, evolutionary relationships, and testing established theories through new fossil discoveries. The Chengjiang site, now protected since its 2012 designation, remains a cornerstone of his scientific contributions.
Siveter highlights the potential for other Chinese fossil sites, such as the Jehol Biota (Lower Cretaceous period), to achieve similar global recognition. He underscores the balance between industrial development and conservation, noting that UNESCO status can diversify local economies through tourism while safeguarding scientifically invaluable resources.
