Dr. Sarah G. Evans is an Associate Professor at Appalachian State University's Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences. She joined the department in Fall 2017 after completing her B.A. at Whitman College and M.S. and Ph.D. in Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder.
- Education: B.A. in Geology and Environmental Studies (Whitman College), M.S. and Ph.D. in Geological Sciences (University of Colorado Boulder)
Dr. Evans is a quantitative hydrogeologist focused on understanding how climate change affects groundwater flow systems in cold regions with frozen ground. Her research synthesizes numerical modeling, remote sensing, and field instrumentation to study evolving Arctic water resources. Key areas of interest include permafrost thaw, water tracks, thermoerosional gullies, and cryospheric hydrology.
Her recent publications (2024-2025) emphasize Arctic hydrology, permafrost dynamics, and climate-warming impacts. These works explore spectral vegetation signatures, LiDAR-based gully analysis, and groundwater connectivity in thawing landscapes. Awards include the 2023 National Science Foundation CAREER grant and the 2022 College of Arts and Sciences William C. Strickland Outstanding Junior Faculty Award.
- Scientific Awards:
- National Science Foundation CAREER grant (2023)
- William C. Strickland Outstanding Junior Faculty Award (2022)
Dr. Evans actively mentors students and leads interdisciplinary research projects addressing Arctic climate adaptation, groundwater-surface water interactions, and sustainable resource management. Her outreach initiatives, such as the H2COLD program, translate permafrost research for rural communities.
