Sarah Ewald is a Researcher and doctoral candidate at the Department of Ethnology, University of Tübingen (since 2018), and pursues her PhD in Ethnology at the University of Heidelberg (since 2016). Her work focuses on South Asia and the Himalayas, with thematic emphases on labor, political ecology, visual media, and postcolonial studies. She holds an M.A. in Ethnology and Geography from Heidelberg (2011) and prior studies in Forestry and Environment from Freiburg (2003).
Her research explores everyday life, precarity, and political exceptionalism. She is also an experienced documentary filmmaker, producing works such as Dakar dem Dik (2012) on migration between Europe and West Africa. She has taught courses including Media Anthropology, Visual Ethnography, and Regional Ethnology of the Himalayas at Tübingen and Heidelberg.
Professional roles include freelance documentary filmmaking since 2012 and contributions to research projects like Youth and Media (India) and Negotiating Religion (Pakistan). She collaborates with institutions such as the South Asia Institute and Karl Jaspers Center.
