Sarah Elizabeth Charles is an adjunct professor at The New School’s College of Performing Arts, teaching courses such as "Jazz and Gender" and "New Narratives". She is a vocalist, composer, and teaching artist known for her innovative work in jazz, blending classical training with contemporary and interdisciplinary approaches. Her performances include engagements at the White House, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Charles is also a leader in music education, co-developing early childhood programs in Haiti and advocating for equity in the arts through initiatives like This Is A Movement.
Her research interests focus on gender dynamics in jazz, cultural equity, and interdisciplinary artistic collaboration. She has released multiple acclaimed albums with her band SCOPE, including Inner Dialogue (2015), Free of Form (2021), and Blank Canvas. Upcoming projects include Dawn (funded by Chamber Music America) and Liberating the Bird, a composition series based on Maya Angelou’s poetry.
Charles has received the Yale Distinguished Teaching Artist Award (2019) and grants from the New York City Women’s Fund and Chamber Music America. She is a member of Decoda, an ensemble dedicated to social impact through music education, and co-leads the Joe’s Pub Working Group.
