Sarah Duerden is a Teaching Professor in the Department of English at Arizona State University (ASU). She holds a PhD from ASU, focusing on Seamus Heaney's public poetry, alongside an M.A., PGCE in English and Drama from the University of Sheffield, and a B.A. in English from the same institution. Her work bridges English literature and rhetoric/composition, with a focus on integrated curricula in engineering and humanities education.
Her research emphasizes active learning, cooperative learning, and curricula assessment, particularly in interdisciplinary programs like ASU’s First-Year Integrated Program for Engineering (FIPE). She has collaborated with faculty in Engineering, Physics, Math, and Chemistry to develop cross-disciplinary teaching methods. Courses taught include First-Year Composition, Writing About Literature, Business Writing, and Popular Periodical Writing. She also mentors teaching assistants in developing teaching portfolios.
Her publications span over two decades, addressing topics such as integrated curricula, engineering education ethics, and the role of writing in fostering cultural literacy among engineering students. Her early work on Seamus Heaney reflects her transition from literature to rhetoric, while her later work highlights innovative pedagogical strategies in STEM-humanities integration.
