Prof. Sarah Davies is a Universitätsprofessorin at the University of Vienna's Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS). Her work bridges the co-production of science and society with a focus on digital practices, academic work conditions, and science communication. She holds a PhD from Imperial College London (2008) and has held positions in the UK, US, Denmark, and Norway, including a Marie Curie Fellowship. Her research examines how digital tools mediate scientific knowledge production and public engagement.
Key research interests include: digitization in academia, material practices of technoscience, critical studies of science communication, and the role of digital technologies in shaping scientific practices. She has authored/co-authored books like Hackerspaces (2017) and Science Societies (2024), and edited volumes on reflexivity and academic citizenship.
Major projects include Organising Co-Creation (2022–2023) and The Chemistry of Senses (2022–2024). Her work appears in journals like Science, Technology & Human Values and JCOM, with a focus on empirical and theoretical contributions to STS. Recent activities include keynote addresses on academic data work and public communication's role in democracy.
Her academic leadership includes organizing workshops on STS methodologies and serving as editor for influential texts. She actively engages with policy debates around AI governance and digital ethics, reflecting her commitment to bridging scholarly and societal concerns.
