Sarah Catmur

Sarah Catmur is a Senior Lecturer at the University of East London (UEL), affiliated with the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering and the Department of Engineering & Construction. She has been with UEL since 2000, after studying Civil Engineering at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, and gaining site experience with Balfour Beatty. Her academic career spans over 20 years, during which she led flagship programs like BEng and MEng Civil Engineering and now serves as the Civil Engineering and Geospatial and Mapping Science degree apprenticeship lead.

Sarah’s research focuses on hydraulic systems and sustainable infrastructure. Pre-UEL, she investigated sediment transport in meandering rivers at Hydraulic Research Wallingford Ltd. Currently, she explores green roofs’ dual benefits in energy efficiency and stormwater management within sustainable drainage systems. Her work bridges experimental hydrology and civil engineering applications.

Her publications from 1999–2005 address overbank flow dynamics, sediment transport in meandering rivers, and two-stage channel hydraulics. These studies contribute to understanding river morphodynamics and floodplain management. She actively engages with industry through degree apprenticeships, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and advisory boards, emphasizing employment readiness and student experience.
