Sarah Buel is a Clinical Professor of Law at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Arizona State University. A survivor of domestic violence, she has dedicated over 30 years to advocating for victims through legal practice, education, and policy reform. Her career includes roles as a prosecutor in Massachusetts and clinical professor at the University of Texas School of Law, where she co-founded the Domestic Violence Clinic and the Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
Her education includes a B.A. from Harvard University (1987) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1990), where she pioneered initiatives like the Harvard Battered Women’s Advocacy Project. Buel’s work focuses on criminal justice, domestic violence intervention, and interdisciplinary approaches to ending violence. She has been recognized nationally, including by NBC as one of America’s five most inspiring women.
Her research emphasizes legal frameworks for victim protection, juvenile court reforms, and healthcare-legal partnerships. Over 150 articles and projects highlight her contributions to domestic violence policy and clinical legal education. Key initiatives include developing evidence documentation protocols and advocating for forfeiture strategies to combat domestic violence.
Buel’s awards reflect her impact on legal and social systems. Her projects bridge law, healthcare, and social work, fostering community partnerships to address systemic violence.
