Sarah Brucia Breitenfeld is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Pittsburgh, where they joined the faculty in 2024. Previously, they served as a Center for Faculty Diversity Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics at Davidson College. Their research focuses on systematically erased narratives, particularly those of women, enslaved individuals, and marginalized groups in antiquity. Breitenfeld holds a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Washington (2022), an M.A. in Classics from the same institution, and a B.A. in Classics from Skidmore College.
Research interests include Greek history, slavery, gender/sexuality studies, race/ethnicity, epigraphy, and reception studies. Their current book project, Geographies of Enslavement: Gender, Violence, and Space in Ancient Greece, examines how enslaved women navigated ancient built environments. Notable publications include analyses of curse tablets from Roman Bath, receptions of Homeric epics in modern media, and studies on enslaved laborers in Athenian texts.
Breitenfeld has received prestigious awards such as the American Dissertation Fellowship (AAUW) and multiple teaching and research grants. Their work bridges classical studies with contemporary cultural critiques, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding ancient social dynamics.
