Sarah Barrow is a Professor of Film and Media at the University of East Anglia's School of Media, Language and Communication Studies. She holds academic memberships in Media Equality, Area Studies, and the Film, Television and Media group. Her research focuses on Latin American cinemas, particularly Peruvian cinema, media, and cultural policy. She leads the 'Women of Influence' project exploring Indigenous female leadership in the Peruvian Amazon and chairs the interdisciplinary study on female-led leadership models in Peru.
Education includes a PhD from the University of Sheffield (2007) on Peruvian Cinema and Political Violence, a BA in Modern Languages from the University of Cambridge (1991), and an MA in European Media Studies from the University of Manchester (1992). She has held numerous external roles, including Trustee of the Norwich Arts Trust, Board Member of the Arts Council of England, and advisor to OCR Examinations.
Her research interests emphasize feminist media studies, cultural policy's role in place-making, and decolonial methodologies. Recent work includes special journal issues on Indigenous Feminisms and participatory practices in the Global South. Awards include the UEA Impact & Innovation Award (2025) and a Choice Outstanding Academic Title (2019).
She actively supervises PhD students and has secured funding from the British Academy and AHRC. Her projects often involve collaborative fieldwork in Peru, blending academic research with community engagement initiatives. She also participates in national cultural policy boards and creative city development initiatives in Norwich.
