Dr. Sarah Allison is an Assistant Professor and DXA Lead at Northumbria University, with an honorary appointment in the School of Biosciences at the University of Surrey. She holds roles in the Royal Osteoporosis Society's Research and Innovation Grant Assessment Panel and previously served on the Bone Research Society's committees. Her research focuses on exercise interventions for bone and muscle health in aging populations, funded by the MRC, EU Horizon 2020, and the Dunhill Medical Trust.
Education: BSc in Sport Science (Northumbria University), MSc in Exercise Physiology (Loughborough University), and a PhD in Human Biology (Loughborough University). Her doctoral work explored high-impact exercise effects on bone strength in older men. She later worked as a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge evaluating bone structure using clinical CT.
Research interests include osteoporosis prevention, exercise physiology in aging, and translating research into clinical practice. Key contributions include studies on dietary intake in hip fracture patients, pain and physical activity correlations in postmenopausal women, and nature-based interventions for older adults' wellbeing.
Scientific awards include New Investigator Awards from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Royal Osteoporosis Society, and Bone Research Society. She has authored over 10 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on musculoskeletal health, gerontology, and healthcare innovation.
Teaching and leadership: Leads modules on the MSc Clinical Exercise Physiology program and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Previously held roles as Lecturer at the University of Surrey and Senior Lecturer at Teesside University.
