Dr. Darren Candow serves as a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina, where he leads research focused on optimizing health outcomes in aging populations through evidence-based lifestyle interventions.
His primary research investigates the synergistic effects of nutrition (particularly creatine monohydrate supplementation) and physical activity (resistance training) on muscle physiology, bone density, and neurocognitive function. This work bridges exercise science and geriatric health, emphasizing practical clinical applications for age-related functional decline. His laboratory develops translational protocols targeting sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and cognitive impairment in older adults.
Dr. Candow has secured competitive research funding from major national and international agencies including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Nutricia Research Foundation. He has mentored over 20 graduate students across MSc and PhD programs while teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise physiology, human nutrition, and healthy aging.
He directs the Aging Muscle and Bone Health Laboratory, which employs multidisciplinary approaches integrating biomechanics, molecular biology, and clinical assessment to evaluate interventions for preserving musculoskeletal and neurological integrity during aging.
