Sara Quintero Pomares is a researcher and artist affiliated with the School of Communication and Arts at Nebrija University, where she is part of the Aesthetics and Theory of the Arts area and the ETCC Nebrija Research Group on Transversal Studies in Contemporary Creation. She earned her PhD from Universidad Complutense de Madrid with a thesis on the persistence of painting in contemporary art (1990–2010).
- PhD in Art, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2012)
Her artistic and research practice centers on feminist theory, iconography, and the critique of patriarchal structures through visual culture. She reinterprets historical narratives—particularly Christian martyrdoms, mythological figures like Cassandra, and lunar symbolism—to expose enduring systems of gender-based violence and silencing. Her work connects classical art with contemporary issues, such as the treatment of women, refugees, and moral decay in European society.
The themes in her recent artworks—such as Among the Ashes, When the Executioners Burn, and Are you ever going to believe me?—reveal a consistent engagement with power, testimony, resistance, and the female body. These works, primarily from 2019, reflect a deep interdisciplinary approach, merging art, philosophy, and political critique. Her visual language combines appropriation, symbolic transformation, and emotional intensity to challenge dominant narratives.
She has been recognized with numerous awards and participations, including:
- III Todisa Painting Prize
- XIII Premio de Artes Plásticas La Rural
- Open Work: International Visual Arts Award
- Participation in multiple biennials and art fairs across Spain
Sara Quintero has no listed advisees or grants, but her artistic exhibitions and research output demonstrate a sustained commitment to critical discourse in contemporary art. She has participated in collective projects like The Influence of the Moon on Women's Heads and Journey to the Asylum, further emphasizing her engagement with feminist and cultural themes.
She maintains an active artistic presence through exhibitions, a personal website, and social media, contributing to both academic and public dialogues on art and society.
