Dr Sara McKelvie is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton’s School of Primary Care Research. She holds a dual appointment as Deputy Head of School for Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise within Primary Care, Population Sciences, and Medical Education. Her research focuses on community-based alternatives to hospitalization for elderly populations, using ethnographic methods and cognitive task analysis to study clinical workflows in ambulatory care. She completed her NIHR-CLAHRC-funded doctorate at the University of Oxford (2021) and a Master’s in Gerontology from King’s College London (2017). She is also an NHS GP with a geriatric care specialization, currently working in a Community Health Trust to develop intensive community care pathways for older adults with complex health needs.
Dr McKelvie teaches qualitative research methods for the Public Health Masters program, contributes to undergraduate medical curricula, and supervises medical student research projects. She has led multiple research initiatives including the CAtCH-Falls project and the DOMINO-HFF study. Her awards include the RENKEI Early Career Fellowship (2024) and the HEA Fellowship (2023).

Her research integrates workforce development for primary/community care with innovative knowledge exchange strategies. Current projects investigate social prescribing in medication review, digital anticholinergic reduction tools, and community-based alternatives to acute hospitalization for fall-related injuries.
