Sara Liao is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies and Asian Studies at the Pennsylvania State University, College of the Liberal Arts. She previously served as an assistant professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Her research focuses on the intersections of media technologies, state influence, consumerism, and gender dynamics in transnational contexts, particularly within broader Chinese societies. She holds a Ph.D. in Media Studies from the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas.
Her research explores how media shapes cultural production and identities, with a recent emphasis on feminist activism in China, including the #MeToo movement and activism against sexual harassment. Her book Fashioning China: Precarious Creativity of Women Designers in Shanzhai Culture (2020) examines the creative and precarious experiences of female fashion designers in China. She also studies digital media's role in social movements, queer articulations, and the interplay between nationalism and transnational capital.
Her publications span prestigious journals like Signs, Journal of Communication, and Chinese Journal of Communication. Current projects include research on feminist movements and digital activism in China. She teaches courses on global communication, gender and media, and critical cultural theories.
Her work bridges media studies, gender studies, and transnational cultural analysis, emphasizing the socio-political dimensions of media in Asian contexts. She is affiliated with the Department of Asian Studies at Penn State’s University Park campus.
