Sara Karn is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of History at McMaster University, working on the SSHRC Partnership project Thinking Historically for Canada's Future. She completed her PhD at Queen's University in 2023 and is also a certified K-12 teacher in Ontario.
Her research focuses on empathy and emotion in history education, with particular emphasis on decolonizing Canadian history curricula and integrating Indigenous perspectives. Her work spans history and social studies education, experiential learning, and environmental and climate change education. She has published in prominent journals including The Social Studies, History Education Research Journal, Historical Encounters, Rethinking History, the Canadian Journal of Environmental Education, and the Canadian Journal of Education.
Her recent publication analyzes how Canadian history and social studies curricula address (or fail to address) the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action regarding Indigenous education, finding that while progress has been made, curricula must do far more to challenge dominant narratives and value Indigenous worldviews.
