Dr. Sara Good is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Winnipeg, affiliated with the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex. Her research focuses on evolutionary and population genomics, particularly the evolution of genomes and gene families. She leads the Laboratory of Evolutionary & Population Genomics, investigating topics such as the relaxin family of peptide hormones, sex differentiation in lampreys, and gut-immune-microbial interactions using mouse and Japanese medaka models. Collaborations include work with Dr. Margaret Docker on lamprey sex determination and the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis. Her work addresses both basic scientific questions and applied challenges like biocontrol strategies for invasive species.
Research interests span evolutionary genomics, molecular population genomics, and the intersection of genomics with ecological and epidemiological questions. Key projects include studying the genetic pathways of gonadal sex differentiation in lampreys, the role of INSL5 in gut-microbe interactions, and the genetic epidemiology of conditions like HIV susceptibility and food allergies. Funding partners include the University of Winnipeg, University of Manitoba, University of Toronto, and Hospital for Sick Children.
Dr. Good’s lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining molecular, statistical, and computational methods. Their findings contribute to understanding evolutionary processes and have implications for human health and conservation biology. The lab’s activities are detailed on their website: https://www.saragoodlab.com/.
