Sara Goldhaber-Fiebert is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University. Her academic appointments focus on translating simulation-based learning and implementation science into clinical practice to enhance patient safety and provider well-being. She completed her medical degree at Harvard Medical School (2003), residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (2007), and a simulation fellowship at the Center for Medical Simulation, Harvard.
Her research emphasizes three core areas: 1) emergency manual implementation for crisis management, 2) surgical caps with names/roles to improve teamwork, and 3) application of mixed-methods implementation science. She co-founded the Emergency Manuals Implementation Collaborative and developed the emergencymanual.stanford.edu resource. As Co-Director of Stanford's Evolve simulation program, she trains clinicians in crisis resource management using high-fidelity simulation.
Key research outcomes include demonstrating sustained clinical use of emergency manuals over six years, quantifying improvements in perioperative communication through labeled caps, and advancing understanding of cognitive aids' impact on team performance. Her work bridges healthcare systems engineering with frontline clinical practice.
Teaching responsibilities include directing anesthesia clinical experiences, mentoring medical scholars, and supervising undergraduate/graduate research. She collaborates across disciplines to address safety challenges in healthcare and other high-stakes industries.
